Activist Collective Asserts to Have Scraped Millions of Music Files from the Streaming Giant

A digital rights group has stated to have scraped a vast number of tracks from Spotify and is preparing to publish them online.

Potential Impetus for Artificial Intelligence Development

Industry experts said the seeming leak could boost artificial intelligence firms searching for material to train their models.

A group known as Anna’s Archive reported it had obtained 86 million audio tracks from Spotify and 256 million rows of associated data such as performer and record names. The company, which carries more than 100 million tracks, stated that the leak did not represent its entire inventory.

“We have located and disabled the nefarious user accounts that were involved in unlawful scraping,” stated a Spotify representative.

The Swedish service, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, added that an investigation into unauthorized access identified a third party scraped public metadata and used questionable methods to bypass DRM protections.

Archive's Declared Goal and Worries

The streaming service does not believe the music taken by Anna’s Archive has been made public yet. Anna’s Archive, which is known for providing links to copyright-infringing books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

They claimed the music files represented 99.6% of all music streamed to by its listeners and would be shared via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a method of sharing large data files online.

“Of course the service doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic beginning,” commented Anna’s Archive, which frames its purpose as “preserving humanity’s information and heritage”.

Model Development and Intellectual Property Debate

Ed Newton-Rex for defending artists’ copyright, said the breached music would probably be used for training artificial intelligence systems.

“Educating models on pirated data is sadly widespread in the AI industry, so this stolen music is almost certain to be used training AI models,” he stated.

The Anna’s Archive site alludes to a large online archive, a huge online repository of pirated books that has allegedly been leveraged by Meta to train its AI models.

A founder of an artificial intelligence company wrote on the professional network that members of the public could in principle “build their own personal free equivalent of the service”. The executive said it could also allow technology firms to “educate models on modern music at scale”.

Intellectual property law has emerged as a key issue between creatives, writers and creatives on one side and AI companies on the other.

Policy Proposals and Responses

In the UK, creative professionals have raised concerns against a government proposal to allow AI companies use protected work without permission unless the owner signals. Almost every respondent to a government call for evidence on the idea has backed artists’ concerns.

The secretary of state for technology, innovation and technology told parliament this month there was “no clear consensus” on the issue, adding that ministers would “take the time to get this correct”. The government has pledged to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by March 2025.
