Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not only his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
