Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then found many other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report initial examinations show the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to where it came from; investigators are not yet informed of any harm in connection with the event," they commented.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the case" and have asked to the public for information.
An important political figure commented the incident left him stunned and required to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the murder of nine people by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in 2020.
