Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
