Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
